Leeds Jewish Care Services has been chosen to pilot a countrywide project which will provide a free on-line information store for people over the age of 50, carers, relatives, friends and professionals. The ‘Linkage’ Project which has been funded by the Department of Work and Pensions will concentrate on improving the information available to older people and help them to get access to the support, services and information they need.
The site includes details of a large number of organisations and services relevant to older people in Leeds. It also allows people to see and print out a large number of documents and gives direct access from the site to hundreds of other websites. People can search the site in a number of different ways – by theme such as ‘Carers’, ‘Health and Wellbeing’ or ‘Transport’ or by alphabetical order. People can also find all organisations and services which work in their area. There is a regularly changing news item on the home page, and people will be able to sign up to receive a monthly emailed newsletter.
The site has been designed to be highly accessible to people with a range of visual and motor impairments, and to people who are not highly IT literate.
‘We are delighted that we have been chosen as one of the 8 gateways in Leeds to run this scheme in conjunction with Linkage Plus. We have been provided with a laptop computer and access to a huge database of information on local services such as theatre and cinema times and concession prices, bus and train times, approved local workmen and disabled access and parking. The free drop-in service will be run by a team of volunteers from the Marjorie & Arnold Ziff Community Centre’ said Project Co-ordinator, Naomi Caplin.
